Things to do at Montañas de Cariblanco
Hiking Trails through Coffee Plantations and Rain Forest
The hiking trails at Montañas Cariblanco are the highlight of the area. You will walk among coffee plantations and forests.
The trails here are a mix of easy and medium levels, ideal for all types of hikers. The one that goes to the waterfall has a small section that is a bit difficult because it is uphill, but if you walk slowly and with a few stops you will climb well.
If you are lucky and go during the harvest season, you will see the coffee trees full of fruits and you will even be able to observe the natural drying process.
La Angelita Waterfall
This waterfall is a must-see. The walk of about an hour and a half is well worth it.
While swimming in the waterfall isn’t allowed since its water is collected by the government (AyA) for human consumption, it’s a great spot for some photos and to enjoy the cool mist.
As the water is for human consumption you can fill your water bottle here.
Picnic Areas
These areas are ideal for relaxing after a hike, enjoying a meal surrounded by nature, or just sitting back and taking in the beautiful surroundings. They’re perfect for families, couples, or anyone who wants to have a calm moment in nature.
Please note that you have to make a reservation the day before if you want to stay there.
Swimming in the River
While swimming in the waterfall isn’t possible, there’s a section of the river downstream, near the picnic area, where you can swim. This spot is ideal for cooling off on a warm day and adds extra fun to your visit.

Tips for Visiting Montañas de Cariblanco
As a local, these are some tips to visit Montañas de Cariblanco:
- Shoes: Good hiking shoes are important here. Make sure they have a good grip, as the trails can get slippery, especially after rain. Although the 2 times I have visited it I have seen people wearing sandals and they made it.
- Gear: Bring a water bottle, bug spray, and some sunscreen. A hat is also a good idea to protect you from the sun, especially if you arrive after 10:00 a.m. Hiking poles can help you during rainy season.
- Clothing: Wear comfortable clothing suitable for warm weather. When walking through the coffee plantations there is not much shade and it feels hot. Bring an extra set if you plan to play in the river
- Take care of nature. Carry out your trash, stay on the paths, and respect the wildlife. Enjoy your time, but leave the place as you found it
- If you want to see the coffee harvest season, visit between November and March.
- Due to the change of season (high/low) it is best to check their social networks for price changes.
