The closest beaches to San José are Playa Blanca and Playa Mantas in Puntarenas, both about 1.5–2 hours by car.

Costa Rica has white sand beaches on both coasts, but many require extra effort to reach. On the Pacific, some options include Playa Conchal, Playa Penca (Potrero), Playa Blanca, Playa Calzón de Pobre, Playa Rajada, and Playa Quesera. On the Caribbean, Cahuita National Park and Playa Chiquita have lighter sand.
