Getting to Playa Flamingo

By Car

Playa Flamingo is about 260 km (162 miles) from San José and 44 km (27 miles) from Liberia Airport.

If driving from San José, the road is in good condition and paved so any type of car can drive there.

From Liberia, you have a couple of options to arrive there:
The first and shortest route, is Route 911 which is paved but you have to go through a river; during the dry season you can pass with a tall car but in the rainy season you need a 4×4. There’s an alternative crossing through a private farm which has a bridge but charges a fee, and it’s only available when the farm is open.

It’s not recommended to travel this route at night because it’s poorly lit and there are many turns as there is a mountainous terrain. Some parts of the road, narrow down to one lane where two cars cannot pass at the same time, so be careful with oncoming traffic.

The second option from Liberia is taking Routes 21 & 155, this route takes longer, 66km (41 miles) in 1 hour and 20 minutes approximately, but it is fully paved, well signposted & better lit.

By Public Transportation

From San José there are several public transportation companies that provide routes to Guanacaste, some of them allow purchasing tickets online and you can check schedules according to your travel dates. The bus journey from San José to Guanacaste can take more than 6 hours depending on the schedule, traffic, and season.

If you prefer private transportation you have options such as Uber or Ride CR , however these can be more expensive with prices ranging from $355-415 each way for two people. Shared transportation is another option with Interbus offering rides from San José to Guanacaste starting at $65 per person.

From Liberia, you need to go to the Municipal Bus Terminal, located in the city where buses leave towards different parts of the country so it’s important to ask for correct bus and pay attention departure information. The bus ride from Liberia to Flamingo takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Starting from $50, one-way trips from Liberia to Flamingo can be made using Uber or Ride CR, among other private transportation services.

To make it easier for you, we have included all of the bus terminals on the tourist map at the end of this post.

Access to the Beach

Two main accesses lead to Playa Flamingo:

The first way is from the north through Route 180. This goes by the Marina and is beside Margaritaville Beach Resort. You can drive any type of vehicle as this route is fully paved up to the beach. Many people prefer this choice because of a well-maintained road and clear signs. The surrounding road on the beach is gravel but is accessible with all types of vehicles.

The second way is from the south, also off Route 180, but involves a detour by Plaza Bohemia Flamingo. Unlike its northern counterpart, this road has no pavement and limited lighting, which can make it difficult at night especially. Besides, some parts of this road are narrow so drivers should be careful when driving through them. This access leads directly to The Palms Hotel–a good option for those who stay there or nearby since it provides a direct route.

Swimming

Generally speaking, swimming at Playa Flamingo is enjoyable although you need to pay attention to certain things about it. Some parts of the beach have rocks at the bottom; hence one should be cautious while getting into water there. Waves can change from time to time; therefore knowing wave’s status or swell before going out might save your day.

I have been to Playa Flamingo many times and I must say that there are different conditions each time I visit. Sometimes waves are soft thereby allowing one just to relax in them without any worries; other times swells might be powerful thus requiring more experienced swimmers’ attendance in order not to get washed away somewhere far off shore line. Always keep yourself updated about what’s happening around you so that nothing spoils your trip!

Walking through the Beach

Since the beach is 1.3 km (0.8 miles) long, it takes about 15-20 minutes to walk from one end to another. Depending on the light conditions, you may notice that sometimes white sand seems to be light pinkish. This peculiarity adds up to its charm as a beach and makes it more visually attractive.

Best Time to Go to Playa Flamingo

The best time to go to Playa Flamingo is during the dry season, especially in December, January, and February. It is usually windy during these months and the temperatures are not as hot as other months. This makes it an ideal time for outdoor activities and enjoying the beach.

Guanacaste is the province with the highest temperatures and least rain throughout Costa Rica, so if you are going to travel in March or April it is good to know that they are also the hottest months of the year where temperatures often reach over 38°C (100°F).

If you find yourself visiting during the rainy season which goes from May until November then plan your beach time in the morning
